Higher English language requirement for UK settlement applications

The level of English required for applicants seeking indefinite leave to remain in the UK will increase from 26 March 2027. Discover the new English language UK settlement requirements effective March 2027, introduced following proposals in the Home Office’s Earned Settlement consultation in November 2025, and how these changes impact your application.

The new level required will increase from B1 to B2, in line with changes implemented for applicants on work routes since January 2026.

The higher English language level will apply to applicants applying to settle on any of the following routes:

• Skilled Worker

• Global Talent

• Scale Up

• Innovator Founder

• Tier 2 Minister of Religion

• Representative of an Overseas Business

• UK Ancestry

• International Sportsperson

• Long Residence

• Bereaved Partner

• Private Life

• Family Life

Applicants who apply before the implementation date next year will only have to meet the existing B1 requirement.
