The level of English language required for applicants applying for indefinite leave to remain in the UK will increase from 26 March 2027. This follows proposals put forward in the Home Office's Earned Settlement consultation in November 2025.

The new level required will increase from B1 to B2, in line with changes implemented for applicants on work routes since January 2026.
The higher English language level will apply to applicants applying to settle on any of the following routes:
Skilled Worker
Global Talent
Scale Up
Innovator Founder
Tier 2 Minister of Religion
Representative of an Overseas Business
UK Ancestry
International Sportsperson
Long Residence
Bereaved Partner
Private Life
Family Life
Applicants who apply before the implementation date next year will only have to meet the existing B1 requirement.
