New British Citizenship Route for Irish Citizens Now Open

Updated: Oct 25, 2025

United Kingdom and Irish flag

As of 22 July 2025, Irish citizens who have lived in the UK for five years can now apply for British citizenship through a new simplified registration route, introduced by the British Nationality (Irish Citizens) Act 2024. This long-awaited change was first proposed nearly two decades ago and passed in the final days of the previous government. The route officially opened following the Commencement Regulations published on 1 July 2025.

Eligibility - How to Register for British Citizenship

An Irish citizen will be able to register as a British citizen where:

  • they can show they have been living in the UK for the previous 5 years

  • during the 5 years, they must have not been absent for a total of more than 450 days

  • during the final year, they must have not been absent for more than 90 days

  • during the 5 years, they must have not been in breach of the immigration laws

  • they are of good character

Applications are submitted online via Form B(OTA). A paper form is used if applying from the Channel Islands, Isle of Man or a British Overseas Territory.

Fees - British Citizenship Route for Irish Citizens

The registration fee will be 50% cheaper than for other nationalities, at £723 for adults and £607 for children. Children looked after by the local authority will be processed free of charge, as will those who can credibly demonstrate they can’t afford the application fee.

Importantly, applicants do not need to take the Life in the UK Test or prove English language knowledge.

Although Irish citizens already enjoy strong rights in the UK under the Common Travel Area, this new route offers an easier and more affordable path to British citizenship, one that we expect many will now take advantage of.
